Blakely Raise or Kinniside Stone Circle

OS grid ref:- NY 060140

Blakely Raise or Kinniside Stone Circle as it is sometimes referred to locally, stands a few metres from the fell road which runs from the quiet village of Ennerdale Bridge to Calder Bridge.

The circle was reconstructed in 1925, and the base of the stones have now been set into concrete. The monument consists of eleven stones set in a circle, with a diameter of eighteen metres, it has possible entrances to the south and the northwest. The tallest stone measures 1.15 metres in height.

From Blakely Raise Stone Circle there are excellent views to Whitehaven on the coast, and on a clear day to Scotland and the Isle of Mann.

Directions

To access the circle - take the road to Ennerdale Bridge from Cleator Moor, following the river. Turn right at Longmoor and continue for about a mile, pass over a cattle grid and look for the circle on your left a short distance from the road as you reach the top of a rise.
